All systems go for LC science high school

By Dominic B. dela Cruz Staff reporter Laoag City —With the Dept. of Science and Technology finally giving its approval, the dream of having a science high school in this city became a reality. Laoag mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas personally made the announcement after DOST officials visited the city to firm up plans for the school. Mrs. Fariñas added that the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) already issued a certification approving the proposed school site. The MGB is the primary government agency under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) responsible for the conservation, management, development and proper use of the country’s mineral resources including those in reservations and lands of public domains. DOST rolls out Regional S&T week in Candon City

Laoag CITY—The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will showcase again its latest achievement and innovation, bringing the products of Science and Technology closer to people. In cooperation with the Candon City government,  the 2017 Regional Science and Technology Week  celebration and caravan will be on October 3-6, 2017 at the Candon City Civic Center will feature more than 40 technologies concerning agriculture and fisheries, food processing, metals and engineering, industry, environmental and other technologies. IN business group, workers oppose 4-day work week

By Leilanie G. Adriano Staff reporter LAOAG CITY—Local business groups and workers here have opposed a measure in Congress to allow four-day workweek by increasing the normal daily work hours. If House Bill (HB) 6152 becomes a law, companies will reduce the number of workdays by increasing the usual eight-hour workday to a 10- or 12-hour workday. Ricardo Tolentino, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)-Ilocos Norte chapter expressed concerns that this may have a negative impact on the productivity of small businesses and local work force as well. While acknowledging that the compressed four-day work week could help solve heavy traffic in Metro Manila, Ricardo pointed out it is just a “band-aid solution” to the problem. “What we need is a long-term solution to traffic. The travel expo held at the SMX Convention Center in Metro Manila gathers local government units (LGUs) along with hospitality and business establishments to showcase their best packages, promotional deals, and other tourism-related services. According to Ilocos Norte provincial tourism officer Aian Raquel, Ilocos Norte's participants were "very satisfied with the result of their sales—that’s the best indicator of the success of our presentation because this is a trade show. It is important that we were able to promote our province through the sales of our private counterparts."
