Ilocos Norte Liga ng mga Barangay elects new officers

LAOAG CITY—The Liga ng mga Barangay—more popularly known as the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC)—Ilocos Norte chapter elected their new officers on August 8, 2016 at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Session Hall.

Representatives from the Laoag City Commission on Elections (Comelec) office, the Dept. of Interior and Local Government, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a pastor from the Sarrat Baptist Church witnessed the election.

The new ABC Ilocos Norte chapter officers are: Paul Baltazar of Sarrat, president; Celso Ragusante of Paoay, vice president; and Joel Tesoro, Faustino Tomas, Al Aguibay, Alexander Navarro and Reynaldo Mariano, board of directors.

Mr. Baltazar was the previous ABC Ilocos Norte chapter vice president; and with the election of former ABC Ilocos Norte chapter president Charles Tadena as Dingras councilor, he ascended to the position.

The ABC Ilocos Norte chapter president automatically becomes an ex-officio member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.


Under the Local Government Code, the Liga ng mga Barangay is governed by their own constitution and by-laws.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
