LAOAG CITY—A state-of-the-art three-storey building which shall be known as another branch of the Philippines Science High School (PSHS) will soon rise in the province under the administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

If plans do not miscarry, outstanding high school students here who are exemplary in math and science subjects need not to experience early separation anxiety with their families and go to San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur, the closest branch of PSHS in Region 1.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Ma. Cristina “Ria” Fariñas, daughter of Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas (1st district Ilocos Norte) confirmed this after a consultation dialogue with officials of the Department of Education.

Through the initiative of Ms. Fariñas’ dad, who currently serves as the Majority Floor Leader of the House of Representatives, she said, “the vision is to come up with a separate and world class Science High School in Laoag City”, which shall be located at the vacant lot of the Ilocos Norte National High School.

According to Ms. Fariñas, the DepEd has already committed around 83 million for this purpose including its program of works to be implemented the soonest possible time.

Once completed, she added the proposed building is expected to open for students by the school year 2018.

Earlier, local DepEd officials here went to Metro Manila and visited the facilities of the PSHS central office, where the proposed project shall be patterned.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
