INWD at 15: Let’s start growing trees

LAOAG CITY—Ilocos Norte Water District General Manager John Teodoro called on its concessionaires in Ilocos Norte and some parts of Ilocos Sur and Cagayan to help conserve water and start growing trees now.

In time for its 15th year anniversary on August 16, 2017, Mr. Teodoro said there is no better way to help INWD sustain its mandate than to observe water conservation and to report any leaks in water system.

On its 15th anniversary, INWD management and staff conducted a replanting activity around the Paoay Lake, where the government-run water district and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources jointly developed a forest project in partnership with some private lot owners at the lake.

According to Mr. Teodoro, about 8,500 mahogany saplings were planted during the first phase of the project. To sustain it, the INWD closely monitors its growth.

“For every tree planting, we cannot avoid there are some mortality. So, from time to time, we are conducting replanting activities,” said Mr. Teodoro.

About 900 more mahogany saplings were planted again around Paoay Lake to preserve its forest cover.

In previous years, the DENR helped INWD in negotiating with private lot owners in Paoay for the water conservation management of the legendary lake. Part of it is to ensure the growing of trees around it.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
