DOST rolls out Regional S&T week in Candon City

Laoag CITY—The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will showcase again its latest achievement and innovation, bringing the products of Science and Technology closer to people.

In cooperation with the Candon City government, the 2017 Regional Science and Technology Week celebration and caravan will be on October 3-6, 2017 at the Candon City Civic Center will feature more than 40 technologies concerning agriculture and fisheries, food processing, metals and engineering, industry, environmental and other technologies.

DOST regional director Armando Ganal said there will also be presentation of appropriate technologies during the technology fora, livelihood training, bazaar for DOST-assisted micro, small and medium enterprises, and various activities for students.

Dubbed as, “Science for the People,” the DOST is conducting this event annually to instill public awareness and encourage more stakeholders to take advantage of what Science and Technology can offer to improve quality of life.

Apart from the technology exhibits and forum, a mobile planetarium will also open for students at the second-floor lobby of the Center for Culture and Arts, a presentation of how a 21st century model classroom looks like such as the use of virtual and augmented reality tools for teaching and learning, and DOST courseware for Science and Mathematics.

Those expected to grace the four-day event are DOST officials led by Secretary Fortunato dela Peña, including local government officials and personnel from the different agencies regionwide. (Leilanie G Adriano)

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
