Ilocos Norte senior HS program needs more teachers

LAOAG CITY—The Department of Education in Ilocos Norte said they need more professionals to fill in job vacancies for senior high school (SHS) this school year.

According to schools division superintendent Vilma Eda, there specialized subjects in SHS which they need to fill up. Among these include technical vocational, Filipino, English, social studies, and music, arts, physical education and health (MAPEH) among others.

“We ask our college graduates even those who do not have license yet to file their applications as we need more teachers for senior high program,” said Ms. Eda as she urged interested applicants to go the Ilocos Norte Schools Division Office in Laoag City to file their applications.

Like in various parts of the country, Ilocos Norte is also facing the same challenge of filling up teaching positions for various tracks.

Out of the 1.517 million students enrolled in Grade 11, DepEd records show majority or 60.27 percent signed up in the academic track; while 39.15 percent enlisted in the technical-vocational-livelihood track.

Under the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, DepEd can hire graduates of science, mathematics, engineering, music and other degree courses to teach specialized subjects in elementary and secondary education schools with shortages in qualified applicants who have passed the licensure exam for teachers.

According to Ms. Eda, they have received previous applications but these are not enough yet.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
