Ilocos Norte gov’t equips schools with additional information resources

Laoag City--The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) recently resumed its “Share-a-Book” Program, a program first launched five years ago, aiming to distribute information materials to all public and private high schools around the province.

According to provincial education department officer-in-charge Matilde M. Nery, this initiative is a “continuing program” and is intended to reach even the far-flung areas of Ilocos Norte.

“We are happy that we received again materials from the Human Development Index (HDI) through the initiative of Governor Imee R. Marcos. We have started distributing back in 2013, and we will continue until all of our secondary schools receive their shares,” she stated.

Despite difficulties in reaching far-flung schools, Mrs. Nery reassured that they will find a way to coordinate with local government units (LGUs) for the information resources to reach the designated schools.

“Before, schools were requested to come and get the books. However, they have expressed their sentiments that they don’t have available vehicles to transport the resources. Kaya naman we will work with the LGUs and the Department of Education,” added Mrs. Nery.

Mrs. Nery also reminded senior high school (SHS) students of the on-going scholarship program of PGIN, urging them to avail of the 1,000 slots available prioritizing students enrolled in the Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strands.

So far, 95% of all secondary schools have received books from the PED. The remaining are schools in the far-flung communities. PED has also extended the program to include municipal libraries as beneficiaries. (Ma. Christian A. Ramos, PGIN-CMO)

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
