Laoag City gov’t re-launches free Wi-Fi services

Laoag City—The city government here in cooperation with Smart Telecommunication and Vertext Corporation re-launched the free and upgraded Google Wi-Fi service in this city.

Laoag councilor and Vertext President and CEO Handy Lao said the relaunched services will be give better and faster internet connectivity in select areas around the city.

Mr. Lao disclosed further that the relaunched service is now “unlimited”, whereas the previous iteration limited access to 30 minutes per user in a day.

The select areas are the Laoag International Airport (LIA), Laoag City Public Market, Aurora Park and City Hall. Coming up next will be at the Laoag City Genera Hospital.

The free internet services, Mr. Lao added is to help boost tourism industry in the city; as he stressed this would immediately give foreign, domestic and local tourists internet access to post whatever they want while they are in Laoag.

He added that this will also assist students in their research work.

Meanwhile, the city’s residents thanked the city government and Laoag Mayor Michael M. Keon for this project.

Students noted that this is a great help for them as it would help save them their allowances—instead of loading their phones for internet access or going to computer shops to their homework, they can now do this through the free Wi-Fi connection.

The Ilocos Norte government has also started its own free Wi-Fi services in their own select areas. These are the at Provincial Capitol Building, Aurora Park, and the Laoag City Hall, San Nicolas IT Park, and the Batac City Hall.

The provincial government free Wi-Fi service, however, limits users to only 30 minutes per day.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
