Runners, shooters donate ‘wash area’ for Laoag school

LAOAG CITY—Over a hundred teachers and pupils at the Pila Elementary School in this city joined a simultaneous hand washing demonstration at the newly-installed “wash area” facility, which is just a few steps away from the classrooms of learners.

 

But unlike any other wash area constructed in the school, the Pila school’s hand washing facility was a “labor of love” from the runners and shooters who are joining regular fun run activities and shoot fest competitions in the city, said P/Sr. Master Sgt. Noel R. Abad in an interview following a simple ribbon cutting ceremony attended by pupils and personnel of the Ilocos Norte 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) based at Camp. Capt. Valentin S. Juan, this city.

 

As organizer and founder of the A&A Printing Services, Mr. Abad who is also a team leader of the Ilocos Norte 1st PMFC said a portion of the registration fees being collected from runners and shooters go to a foundation which they use to finance various charity programs and projects for the community particularly the less fortunate children in the province.

 

“This is our way of giving back to the community who is helping us advocate for health and wellness,” Mr. Abad said as he cited most of the frequent runners and shooters are composed of PNP personnel and student-athletes who are preparing for sports competitions both at the local and national levels.

During the inauguration, which P/Lt. Col. Mar Louise Bundoc, force commander of the Ilocos Norte 1st PMFC also attended, they also handed anti-bacterial soaps to Nenita Cabella, head teacher III of the Pila Elementary School with a total of 154 pupils.

 

Aside from the turn-over of hand washing facility, Mr. Abad’s team is also sponsoring various gift giving and feeding programs to Day Care Pupils and other less fortunate children of the province.

 

Last week, disaster preparedness and first aid kits were also turned-over at the San Nicolas Elementary School in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.

 

In cooperation with public and private medical personnel and the city government of Laoag’s social welfare office, a medical mission is also being prepared for next month to provide free medical check-up and medicines to the Bahay Kalinga village in this city.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
