Chinese consul visits Ilocos Norte border personnel

Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte—Officials of the Chinese Consulate in Ilocos Norte, headed by consul Zhou Youbin, visited the northern provincial border in this town and gave border personnel meals and face masks on October 1, 2020.

In time for the Mooncake Festival, the time of the year the moon is at its fullest that symbolizes reunion, the consulate also offered mooncakes. Likewise, October 1 marked the 71^st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

"We are proud to support brave Ilokano frontline workers. I would like to extend our deepest respect to all police, soldiers, medical workers, firemen, and local officials. Thank you for your selfless service to protect the whole community,” Mr. Zhou said.

"We value the longstanding friendship between Filipinos and Chinese. Together, we will finally win the battle against the virus. Wish everyone a Happy Mooncake Festival," he added.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Ilocos Norte's Chinese consulate, in association with Shandong province, Sichuan province, Hubei Enterprise, has been donating various medical aid to the province which were distributed to hospitals, testing centers as well as airport, schools, and border checkpoints.

Reynaldo “Ryan” R. Remigio, external affairs consultant of the provincial government thanked the consulate for their continued support:

"Since we started to require COVID-19 test at our borders, unnecessary travels have decreased by almost 50%. We appreciate the Chinese consulate in Ilocos Norte for donating PPEs to our border frontliners," Mr. Remigio said.

Previously, the consulate also distributed "Friendship Rice" to Northern Luzon provinces. (PGIN-CMO)

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
