LC gears for ‘golden fiesta’ in time for golden foundation bash

Longest ‘boodle fight’ chain set

Laoag City—The city government is preparing for grand fiesta celebration this year as 2015 also marks the city’s golden foundation anniversary on June 19.

Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas announced that she started convening different committees for the fiesta which she said would serve as a prelude for the June 19 charter day celebrations.

To achieve this, she has instructed the fiesta committees to prepare events that is connected with the golden foundation anniversary. She added that some of the events may well continue until June 19.

Ms. Fariñas admitted though that it would be harder to prepare this year’s fiesta as they want it to be a grand celebration with unique activities.

She also disclosed that the city government would also aim to break a world record during the fiesta celebration.

She said the activity they have selected would be the longest boodle fight chain in history where they would include all of the city’s 80 barangays. They are also eyeing the involvement of other government agencies, non-g0vernment organizations, and private entities.

Ms. Fariñas stressed that since Laoag has already won many national awards, it is now time to take a shot at one of the records in the Guinness Book of World Records.

She explained that the boodle fight would encourage all the people of Laoag to eat together as one regardless of their status to show unity.

She added that she also considers this activity as one way of thanking everyone for their cooperation in helping the city attain all success in the past 50 years as Laoag became one of the most progressive cities in the country.

The planned boodle fight would be held during the fiesta celebration and would serve as one of the main fiesta highlights.

Ms. Fariñas also said that they expect the influx of both foreign and domestic tourists for the fiesta.


In line with this, she has also instructed the fiesta committees to also include the tourism aspect in their preparation, especially in terms of accommodation and food.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
