Ilocos Norte lauds young Ilocano chess ace for winning gold chess tilt

LAOAG CITY—Ilocos Norte residents led by Governor Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos lauded 10 year-old Mhage Gerriahlou F. Sebastian for winning the gold medal in the recent 16th Asean Age Group Chess Championships held at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Ms. Sebastian, who hails from Binsang, Pasuquin town won gold in individual standard category and silver in team category as a member of the Philippine team.

Ms. Marcos personally congratulated Ms. Sebastian and her family for bringing pride to Ilocos Norte.

At her young age, Ms. Sebastian has always been a constant achiever in chess, representing the Philippines in age-group chess championships. Among her memorable tournaments include her international tournaments in Macau and Thailand. 

In Ilocos Norte, the provincial government continue to support local athletes by providing due recognition and financial assistance in the pursuit of their career.


“To all those who supported and still willing to support our very own daughter Mhage Fernandez Sebastian in her quest for greater glory in the realm of chess, may you be blessed more. Ang inyong mga panalangin, tulong at panubay sa tuwing may laban si Mhage ay sumasapat na po para matugunan ang ambisyon niya na mas umangat pa ang level at muli’t muli ang pagiging miyembro n’ya sa Philippine Team at kalaunan makapagbigay ulit karangalan sa Pilipinas,” said Jerzon Sebastian who accompanied Mhage in Singapore.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
