OWWA trains Ilocos Norte OFW children

LAOAG CITY—Some children of Overseas Filipino Workers who are recipients of various scholarship grants of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) are underwent a Learning Support Activity (LSA) at the Provincial Capitol cafeteria on April 14-15. 

Participated in by 43 college scholars and those who are entering Grade 11-12 from Ilocos Norte and nearby province of Ilocos Sur, Rhoda Nilda Lee, a representative from the OWWA Region said the two-day seminar aims to teach scholars how to become responsible individuals and guide them how to pursue a good career in the future.

Focused on developing good communication skills, attitude and landing a good career path, Lee said invited resource speakers from the Department of Labor and Employment and OWWA provide the OFW dependents with skills and knowledge vital on how to improve their personality as a student, what they expect after graduation and seek better employment.

In partnership with the OFW and Migrants Desk under the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, the purposively chosen scholars intently participated in the lectures, and gamely joined in the activities which aimed to enhance their learning.

The scholars are dependents of current and former OFWs who have qualified for the OWWA scholarship programs such as the OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (ODSP), Education and Livelihood Assistance Program- Education (ELAP-Education), and the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP). They are currently in different year levels taking up various baccalaureate degrees in their respective colleges and universities.


To become an OWWA scholar, the beneficiary shall maintain an average passing grade of 3.0 and must passed an entrance examination.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
