Big running event marks Laoag mayor’s birthday

LAOAG CITY—Over 6,000 residents of all ages from this city and the province of Ilocos Norte occupied the major thoroughfares in this city on September 22, 2019 as they “ran for unity” in time for the first birthday celebration of Laoag Mayor Michael M. Keon.

Led by the city mayor himself, the first “MMK run for unity” aims to promote a healthy habit of running while encouraging everyone to unite and “work for the common good.”

“This running event is a manifestation to unite all sectors of the society, both from public and private sectors. It also advocates the promotion of health programs of our city mayor,” said Arlene de Guzman, overall chairman of the MMK fun run to the participants on early Saturday.

For the first time after the 2019 midterm elections, a huge number of Laoag residents led by barangay officials were gathered in front of the Aurora Park in support of the current Keon administration.

According to the organizers, more than 8,000 actually registered for the running event with three-kilometer and five-kilometer categories. Registration is free with singlet.

Mr. Keon reiterated that now is the time to work for a brighter future for the city as he promised to do his best to promote the welfare of Laoagueños.

Currently, the city government is working on the improvement of the traffic system particularly along the Gilbert bridge up to Rizal street, Gen. Segundo Ave., and the Sirib mile along Ablan avenue during weekday rush hours.

A traffic experiment is being considered where no parking will be strictly observed at pedestrian crossings and intersections on the road.

Some minor traffic adjustments will also be determined by the implementing authorities for smooth implementation.

Aside from this, the city mayor has set his top priorities as improvement of the Laoag City General Hospital, the city supermarket and management of solid wastes in the city.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
