Ilocos Norte's 2 COVID-19 patients recover; no new case in two weeks

Laoag City—The two coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) have recovered.

MMMH&MC discharged the two patients on April 12, 2020, or on the celebration of the Catholic religion’s Easter Sunday.

According to the MMMH&MC public advisory posted online on April 11, 2020, two patients’ repeat swab (PCR) tests conducted by the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center have tested negative. Currently, the patients are no longer showing COVID-19 symptoms and are in both in stable condition.

The provincial government, however, urged the local government units in charge of the two patients to prepare an isolation area for the two’s 14-day self-quarantine.

“With no new confirmed transmission of COVID-19 in almost two weeks since the province’s first cases, we have flattened the curve and have so far contained the virus,” the Ilocos Norte provincial government announced through a public advisory posted on its official Facebook Page.

The advisory continues to ask for the cooperation of the Ilokano community in maintaining a healthy Ilocos Norte. It further reminded the public to stay at home, exercise at least 30 minutes a day, observe maximum social distancing measures, and encourage returning residents to not come home until the lockdown is lifted.

As of 11:00 am of April 12, 2020, the Provincial Health Office reported that there is no new record of a person under investigation; and the number of persons under monitoring (PUMs) continues to decline with 429 people still going through the 14-day quarantine, while 11,199 PUMs have completed their self-quarantine period. Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
