Rumors of ‘free drug tasting’ alarms CVF

Laoag City—Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas is alarmed by rumors that there is allegedly “free drug tasting” happening in this city.

Ms. Fariñas however said she remains hopeful that this is just a “false alarm.” She added this technique is dangerous as it would give access to younger people.

The mayor has ordered the police through officer-in-charge P/Supt. Jeffrey Gorospe to be more vigilant in this issue.

She stressed that the city government is monitoring all suspected drug personalities and that they are not making any distinction whether those persons are well-known or not.

“Once they are caught in the act, wala na tayong magagawa diyan,” Ms. Fariñas stressed.

She also solicited the support of school officials in the city as well as security agencies to also be more vigilant especially if they notice unknown persons entering their respective schools.

The mayor also appealed to parents and guardians of learners and students to monitor their children and wards.

She emphasized that the alleged “free drug tasting” is very alarming if it is true. She added that she believes this may not only be happening in the city but other places as well.

Meanwhile, Laoag police deputy chief P/Chief Insp. Jonathan Papay said the free drug tasting technique is a new system created by drug pushers. However, he disclosed that the Laoag police is yet to encounter this.

He added that this technique may work for schools or businesses in open areas.

This is a new technique so that they could easily sell these illegal drugs “Ta no ma testing da a mayat, maisayangakat ton tay inda panag-gatang,” Mr. Papay said.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
