BIR-Laoag is top tax collection performer in Region 1

Laoag City—The local Bureau of Internal Revenue has surpassed its monthly collection target, making it the top tax collection performer in the entire Ilocos region.

For the month of January, revenue district officer Simplicio Cabantac said that they have exceeded the collection target by approximately 33 percent or more than P500,000 with a total collection of P139,947,517.

Compared to other revenue district offices in Region 1, Mr. Cabantac said only the Laoag district was able to collect beyond its projected collection target.

“This accomplishment was made possible through the cooperation of our tax payers in Laoag City,” he added citing that based on the same period of last year, tax collection in the province has significantly increased.

In 2012, a total of P965 million was collected by the BIR district office in Laoag City. This year, the collection target is pegged at P1.6 billion.

Earlier, the local revenue district has intensified its tax mapping operation in the province to be able to meet collection target and identify tax evaders.

Part of the tax campaign is to conduct field visits of various establishments to check whether they are complying with the BIR tax requirements such as cash registration, display of payment of annual registration and issuance of sales invoices and official receipts.

Though Ilocos tax payers are generally cooperative, the BIR tax mapping and the so-called “Oplan Silip” and surveillance operations has been intensified to meet the collection target set by the national office.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
