Ilocos Norte gears for PH travel mart expo

LAOAG CITY—The Ilocos Norte Tourism Office (INTO) along with at least 14 local establishments participated in the 27^th Philippines Travel Mart to show why it’s more fun to visit this premiere destination of the north.

Held September 2-4 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila, the event showcased tourism products including airways, tourism packages, travel care services, to that of resorts, and transportation facilities associated in travel and tourism industry.

Like in previous years, Ilocos Norte’s strong participation in the three-day event continue to draw tourists in the province’s top destinations while tourism stakeholders here continue to innovate new products and services particularly among returning visitors.

According to Xavier Ruiz of INTO, most of the travel agencies and hotels that joined this year are returning participants.

Organized by the Philippine Tour Operators in association with the Department of Tourism, Ruiz said the event is a good venue to present the province as a major tourist destination.

Featuring Ilocos Norte’s natural attractions and all new products and services, the Ilocos Norte booth will include the magnificent white rocks formation of Burgos and the sand dunes of Paoay.

Other new attractions such as the Ilocos Cordillera tour will be showcased and the presentation of the Taoid Museum right at the heart of Laoag City including other tourism activities courtesy of the private sector.

Ilocos Norte is among the top 10 tourist destinations in the country, favored for its pristine beaches, rich culture and heritage, gastronomic delights, water and land sports adventure and geological wonders which can be easily reached by land or by air. (Leilanie G. Adriano)

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
