Ilocos Norte vice mayors’ league elect new officers

Laoag City—With fresh mandates, the vice mayors group in Ilocos Norte elected their new set of officers.

Elected president of the Vice Mayors’ League (VML) of Ilocos Norte is Burgos vice mayor Crisente Garcia.

Other elected officers are Nueva Era’s Atty. Aldrin Garvida, executive vice president; Carasi’s Villamor Julian, vice president for the first district; Dingras’ Joeffrey Saguid, vice president for the second district; San Nicolas’ Edistio Valdez, secretary general; Piddig’s Generoso Aquino, assistant secretary; Currimao’s Gladys Cue, treasurer; Bacarra’s Jose Pilar, assistant treasurer; Pinili’s Rommel Labasan, auditor; Vintar’s Amado Victor Rasimo, business manager; and Pasuquin’s Pedro Rex Aguinaldo, public relations officer.

Elected as board directors are: for the first district, Dumalneg’s Francisco Espiritu Jr., Adams’ Eric Baoingan and Bangui’s Denton Garvida; for the second district, Marcos’ Jessie Ermitanio, Badoc’s Alwyn Rubio and Solsona’s Joseph De Lara.

Mr. Garcia takes over from former Badoc vice mayor Thomas Torralba.

In his speech, Mr. Garcia thanked his colleagues for choosing him to lead the group for the next three years. He vowed to do his best to serve, lead and create programs to better the league.

He also sought the support of all the vice mayors to succeed in achieving the league’s vision and mission.

Mr. Garcia also thanked outgoing executive vice president, Laoag vice mayor Michael V. Fariñas for saying he will continue to support the league.

The league president also said he will also seek the support of the provincial government led by Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos for the league’s plans, projects and programs geared towards the further improvement of the province.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fariñas, who oversaw the election, said his office is open to everybody who wishes to look into the measures approved by the city council, more so since the Laoag council is already using a paperless system.

The election was conducted through viva voce, with all nominated officers immediately moved without opponents. All former officers retained their old positions with only those vacant filled up. Additional posts were also created.

The election was held at the Laoag City Hall Auditorium on August 22 at exactly 2:30 in afternoon. It was supervised by representatives from the Dept. of the Interior and Local Government.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
