Laoag City – Mayor Chevylle V. Farinas thanked the Department of Agriculture (DA) for the two farm equipment grants for two rural barangays in the city.

The Sta. Rosa Farmers Association of Barangay 39 Sta Rosa received a recirculating dryer worth PHP3.4 million; and a solar-powered irrigation farm facility worth PHP650,000 for the Bacsil South Farmers Association of Barangay Bacsil South.

These two grants were launched and blessed in the turned over ceremonies on August 1, 2018 under the Corn Banner Program and High Value Crops Program of the Department of Agriculture.

Mrs. Fariñas said the barangay’s equity is the location and housing of said equipment for its protection.

Importante daytoy nga equipment ta inna pamagaan dagiti produkto iti talon a saan ketdi a maiyur-uray iti kaadda ti init aglalo iti tiempo iti pinagtutudo”, the mayor said.

She added: “Panawenen tapnu arakupen tayo iti pannakapabaro ken panagbalbaliw kadagiti tradisyonal wennu kannawidan nga aramid ken kagamitan iti panagtalon.”.

The solar-powered irrigation facility helps generate and produce water to augment water coming from shallow tube wells.

Mrs. Fariñas said this facility can provide water for at least 3 to 5 hectares of farms.

The mayor said she believes the DA grants will help alleviate the farmers’ lives towards modern farming.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
