‘Starbooks’ now accessible for more Ilocos Norte learners

LAOAG CITY—The Department of Science and Technology continuously reaches out to more learners in the province with a better access to various information even without internet connection.

Joven Viernes, DOST provincial director based in Batac City said they have turned over at least one unit of Starbooks (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station) to the provincial library located at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.

As the first Philippine science digital library of the DOST, provincial library users can now access it anytime.

“The stand-alone onsite research kiosk provides free science and technology (S&T) information for academic and livelihood use even without internet connection,” said Ms. Viernes.

Specifically, the kiosk contains thousands of digitized scientific information sourced-out from local and foreign linkages, subscription, archive collections, and in-house publications contained at the DOST’s Science Information Network.

It also features science and technology information on food and nutrition, health and medicine, emerging technologies, energy, environment, appropriate livelihood technologies, investigatory projects and theses in different fields that exist in the country. These are accessible in various formats with text, video and audio.

Aside from the provincial library, at least 11 units were also distributed to selected schools in the province.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
