Batac City—The city government here has 411 scholars for the coming school year 2014-15.

The scholars are broken down as 129 college students and 282 secondary learners.

Batac mayor Jeffrey Jubal Nalupta said the total number of scholars is proof that the city government is throwing its support to students who want to study but could not afford the expenses.

The city’s college scholars are further broken down as 19 freshmen, 26 sophomores, 35 juniors, 46 seniors and 3 5th year college students.

Secondary learners on the other hand are specifically listed as 86 in grade 7, 72 in grade 8, 55 in grade 9, and 69 4th year students.

High school scholars, according to Batac vice mayor Ronald Allan M. Nalupta, have already received P5,000 each for the whole school year from the city government.

As for the college scholars, the city government is still waiting for their respective assessment forms for the city accounting office to have a basis on how much would be given to them.

The vice mayor said the check for the college scholars will go directly to the MMSU Batac or Laoag for their tuition fees.

Vice mayor Nalupta clarified that the 100 percent tuition and miscellaneous fee scholarship is only given to college scholars who are enrolled at the MMSU system.

Courses that are offered in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) are all open except for Nursing and Physical Therapy.

Requirements for the city scholarship for both the high school and college students are the same: photocopy of school records, principal certification that they belong to the honor roll or upper 15 % class, BIR income tax returns of parents; entry level college scholars must also have 90 and above CFAT result with specific general average for the higher years to meet.

Aside from the city scholarship grants, The Ilocos Times learned that the city also offers Sirib Ni Mannalon scholarship program funded by the city’s share in RA 7171, or the Tobacco Excise Tax, the scholarship however is exclusively for farmers’ children.
