Ilocos Norte conducts emergency equipment mapping for disaster preparedness

LAOAG CITY—The Ilocos Norte provincial government is currently conducting emergency equipment mapping to anticipate the occurrence of natural disasters particularly with the onset of rainy season next month.

Learning from previous experiences, Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos is leading the way to prepare Ilocanos in times of calamity which often strikes the province during the last quarter of the year. The provincial government also expressed fears that this may happen earlier now considering the abnormal weather phenomenon as a result of climate change.

Ms. Marcos met with all concerned government agencies including Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), Department of Public Works and Highways, Provincial Health Office, local government units and concerned private contractors with on-going projects in Ilocos Norte to help out in the disaster prepositioning of the province whenever typhoons, landslides or flashfloods occur here.

Instead of gathering all equipment and parking them in front of the Capitol whenever there is a typhoon signal warning, Ms. Marcos said that it is better to know where exactly the equipment are needed as early as now and have them on-standby in areas frequently hit by typhoon.

“Kapag bumagsak na naman yung Paraiso ni Anton [in Pagudpud], masyado nang late pag tatakbo pa. I-preposition na natin ng maaga yung mga equipment,” Ms. Marcos said citing the various on-going construction in the province where their equipment may be pulled out in times of need.

“Nakatutok na tayo dapat sa Solsona, Dingras, may bagong pay loader na nakatutok na rin sa Pagudpud [sakaling may landslide], sa Burgos, may mga magaganda equipment ang First Balfour. Alamin lang natin kung saan ang mga gamit nila so that when there is an emergency, may tatakbo kaagad,” she stressed.

The governor reiterated that the occurrence of natural calamities can never be prevented but the possible loss of lives and damage to properties can be avoided if everybody is prepared during disasters.


Meanwhile, the Provincial Health Office has already started its inventory and purchase of additional medical supplies in response to the prevailing weather-related diseases such as during summer, rainy season and during cold months.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
