Laoag City—With the booming construction activities here, the
Provincial Employment and Service Office (PESO) in cooperation with the
Technical Education Skills Development Administration, Igama Colleges
Foundation Inc. and one of the Philippines fastest growing real estate company,
Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) will be offering a free training course on
masonry with 50 available slots.
In
support of the Provincial Skills Master Plan and Task Force Trabaho program of
the Ilocos Norte government, various skills training are being offered to all
interested Ilocanos with guaranteed employment after graduation.
According
to Rudio, successful applicants will undergo training for 33 days or equivalent
to 258 hours.
After
completing the training program, Rudio assured that various employment
opportunities are waiting for them.
In
previous years, the Ilocos Norte government observed the lack of highly
skilled construction workers needed in the province, prompting construction
companies here to hire from the nearby provinces of Cagayan and Metro Manila.
It
was in this light that the provincial government thought of initiating a skills
survey among the two cities and 21 municipalities of Ilocos Norte to come up
with an inventory of skills and to further engaged interested individuals to
upgrade their fields of interest should they wish to participate in a skills
training the provincial government in cooperation with the TESDA and the PESO
is giving free of charge.
To
jumpstart the project, the PESO initially identified the three municipalities
of Currimao, Paoay, and Pagudpud and Laoag City consisting of 53 barangay
beneficiaries.
In
2013, the Ilocos Norte government targeted at least 5,000.
Through
the creation of skills database, the PESO offices in both province and municipal
levels continue to assists job hunters to direct employers here and abroad.
A
composite team was also formed to visit poorest of the poor villages in Ilocos
Norte where residents were asked to fill out self-assisted questionnaires
identifying what are the specific skills of each respondent, what are other
skills he/she wishes to learn including other concerns about employment.
Meant
to address unemployment as a common problem in the provinces, the Marcos
administration has initiated reforms, making an inventory of skills among
Ilocos residents to match with the current in demand jobs here.
Among
the key employment generations today include call center agents, carpentry and
other mini-construction jobs, food and beverage, cooking, tour guiding and
other tourism-related activities.
