LC names 2014 model families

Laoag City—The city government has announced the winners for the 2014 model families search.

Laoag Population Commission officer-in-charge Janet Retamal said the winners have been classified in three categories: professional category, non-professional and OFW category.

This year’s model family under the professional category is Mr. & Mrs. Real Pedro of Barangay 12 followed by the families of Mr. & Mrs. Jose D. Javier of Barangay 51-B Nangalisan and Mr. & Mrs. Federico R. Castillo of Barangay 54-B Camanggaan.

In the Non-Professional category, top prize went the family of Mr. & Mrs. Manuel C. Ramos Jr. of Barangay 35 Gabu Sur followed by the families of Mr. & Mrs. Jose V, Corpuz Jr. of Barangay 52-A San Mateo and Mr. & Mrs. Joel B. Sebastian of Barangay 46 Nalbo.

In the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) category, the winners are Mr. & Mrs. Rommel Carmen of Barangay 34-B Norte and Mr. & Mrs. Genciano J. Corpuz of Barangay 52-A San Mateo.

According to Ms. Retamal, the search committee also picked nine finalists coming from the three categories. They are: Mr. & Mrs. Bonifacio A. Almondia, Mr. & Mrs. Cenon R. Duco, Mr. & Mrs. Rodolfo A. Felipe, Mr. & Mrs. Elpidio R. Flores, Mr. & Mrs. Edgar P. Juan, Mr. & Mrs. Primo P. Miguel, Mr. & Mrs. Jose R. Pascual, Mr. & Mrs. Rogelio A. Pascual and Mr. & Mrs. Freddie S. Pudiquet.

All the awardees will receive a certificate of recognition while the winners will also receive an additional cash prize and trophy in the amount of P5,000, P4,000 and P3,000 for the top three.

Ms. Retamal thanked the members of the screening committee for their time and effort in going personally to the residences of the nominated families.

This time, the nominees for the winners will also be given cash prizes of P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.

The criteria included how the parents brought their children into becoming better persons, and their relationships to the community and Almighty.

Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas also congratulated the model families this year. She said this recognizes their sacrifices in giving their children good education in order to become a better person.

The awarding was held October 28 at the city auditorium.


The Model families last year were Mr. & Mrs. Ricardo R. Quindara, Mr. & Mrs. Romulo L. Antonio and Mr. & Mrs. Vicente Mamuad Jr. for the Professional, Non-Professional and OFW categories respectively.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
