A total of 20 DOST-1 regional and provincial staff have undergone an enhancement training on advanced presentation tool and techniques last March 9-10, 2014 at the DOST-1 AVR, DMMMSU-MLUC, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The training is part of the capability building program for DOST-1 staff aimed at developing the participants’ ability in preparing presentations and effectively presenting it in an engaging way. Likewise it also provided the participants an alternative presentation tool (aside from using PowerPoint), known as Prezi, that can effectively convey the relationship of ideas to one another through the zooming function.

Mr. Trinmar A. Boado, Science Research Specialist I (SRS I) designated as IT Support Staff at the DOST-1 Regional Standards Testing Laboratory (RSTL), was the resource person on the Introduction to Prezi and How to Use it.

Mr. Boado is a BS Computer Science graduate at the DMMMSU Southern La Union Campus. Based from the lecture, Prezi was released in early 2009 as a new age cloud-based ZUI (zooming using interface) presentation and storytelling software.  It is cloud-based, meaning one can present from a browser, desktop, iPad, iPhone, or Android device. Mr. Boado walked the participants on the step-by-step procedure of creating their first Prezi presentations.

However, even if a person prepared the best content, design and structure, it does not mean a thing if this output is not conveyed to other people.  Presentations are not merely documents or files.  These are meant to be shared between a presenter and their audience.  A great presentation is only as good as the delivery – both by the presenter and by the presentation technology they use. Thus, the training is coupled with a seminar on fundamentals of effective presentation.

The seminar was presented by Ms. Angel Lyn V. Ortiz, Project Assistant II and acting Secretary to the DOSt-1 Regional Director.  Ms. Ortiz is an AB Communications graduate at the University of the Philippines – Baguio City. The discussions focused on the fundamentals of effective presentations and how to present it properly.  Ms. Ortiz emphasized on keeping presentations simple and straight to the point, and engaging oneself with the presentation and the audience.  By doing this, the speaker can present information clearly and effectively and get the message or opinion across.

All participants were required to present their outputs on the second day of the training. The presentations using Prezi were timed and recorded where speakers gave their observations and constructive criticisms. The two-day training was concluded by the inspiring message from the OIC-ARD Paulina P. Nebrida.  She also challenged the participants to apply the learnings in their future presentations of programs and projects they are currently handling.  All participants received certificates of participation while the speakers received certificates of recognition.
