LC girds for ‘Golden Anniversary’ on June 19

Laoag City—The city government is in full preparation for its “Golden Years” celebration on June 19, 2015.

The 50-day countdown began on April 30, 2015.

Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas said they have lined up a series of activities that began on April 30, 2015 with a motorcade and launching of this year’s “Agserbi 24/7”.

On May 1, a Diana around the city was held followed by an Osteoarthritis Lay Forum intended for senior citizens on May 7 held at the city auditorium.

Skills training for Marikina products production was also set for May 11-15 by the city social welfare and development in time with the inauguration of several infra projects of the city.

On June 13, there will be a Laoag Sand Dunes Adventure “Bamboo Boxing” to be held at La Paz to be followed by the awarding of top taxpayers in the city on June 15 to recognize individuals, establishments and others.

A Golden Tag Discount will also be held on June 15-21 by all establishments in the city offering big discounts.

Kabuhayan Projects, in coordination with the Dept. of Labor and Employment (DOLE), will be distributed on June 16. Included in the distribution are 50 Negokarts, 50 Starter Kits, Farm Implements and Packaging Machine.

The awarding of Sunshine Women and the MARDI GRAS & Mujeres Gold will be held on June 17 and 18, respectively.

On June 19, which marks the Golden Year Anniversary, the city government will conduct the LCGH Sunshine Baby/ies program and a 50 percent discount will be given at the city hospital.

Another Diana around the city, a thanksgiving mass, flag raising and ecumenical prayer, time capsule laying and launching of the Laoag City Coffee Table Book and the GLEDCO raffle draw will all be held in the morning of June 19.

While in the afternoon at 2 pm, a Parade Iti Naggapuan will be held, followed by a Dios Ti Agngina Concert in the evening to be punctuated by a “Jubilee Fireworks”.

Other proposed activities for the golden anniversary are wedding for Golden Couples, the SM Ground Breaking and “Gallery of Pictures”.

Relative to this, the mayor asked all Laoagueños to participate in the Golden Year celebration as the golden anniversary can only be celebrated once and a rare opportunity to celebrate.

Ms. Farinas said that she is very thankful as the celebration fell in her first term as mayor.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
