Mechanized farming up for talks

Can farming in the uplands and in the hilly and swamp areas be made profitable? The answer could be yes, but how? Addressing low productivity, scientists and researchers will gather for the 2013 Annual Forum of the Asia Rice Foundation on Nov. 22 to tackle the status, challenges, and opportunities in rice mechanization. Renewable energy and power sources for agriculture machines will also be discussed. Held at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management in Quezon City, the forum’s output will be used in preparation of the National Agricultural Mechanization Roadmap, which aims to intensify and coordinate national programs for in-country machinery development and manufacture. Rossana Marie, Louie Amongo, and Maria Victoria Larona of the University of the Philippines, contented in their paper, titled, Mechanizing Philippine Agriculture for Food Sufficiency that environmental-sound agricultural machinery can turn unfavorable areas into good arable lands, thus increasing the are

Alamat ng baboy

Noong unang panahon, walang baboy.

A fourth magi?

“ Tatlong Hari” or the Three Kings feast ends the Christmas season this Sunday. Of course, the malls will stretch that into February. “Epiphany” means manifestation. And the gospel read is that of the Magi offering gold, frankincense and myrrh to Child in Bethlehem, as  first manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. Was there a Fourth Magi? asks Henry Van Dyke in a story re-read every year. Artaban from Persia arrived late and missed the Child. Or did he? Excerpts: Artaban from  Persia   saw his “star rising in the East”. He raced to join the other Magi, bearing gifts to the Child: a sapphire, a ruby and a pearl. At a grove of date palms, his exhausted horse reared up before a dark object in the shadow of the last palm tree. The dim starlight revealed an ill man, probably one of the poor Hebrew exiles. As he remounted, brown, bony fingers closed on the hem of robe. Should he turn aside, if only for a moment, to give a cup of cold water to man—and miss the quest of a lifetim

AIJC holds forum on media historical research

Before computers and new media transformed Filipino consciousness and gave everyone access to information 24/7, what was the Philippine media system like? Are there studies on how media fared in the early years of Philippine history? These are some questions that will be addressed at the Forum on The Future of Historical Research on Philippine Media on January 10, 2014 at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Conference Room.  A joint project of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) and PIA, the forum will examine the state of media history research in the Philippines. The forum also aims to develop a framework for media history research in the country and a Philippine media history research agenda which could be adopted by academic and historical research institutions. The forum hopes to organize a network of media history advocates and researchers. Three panels will discuss the state of historical res
