Relief pack distribution in Batac

Ilocos Norte Vice Governor Angelo M. Barba, standing in for Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee R. Marcos, leads the distribution of relief packs to typhoon Mario victims. The packs included construction materials, vegetable and corn seeds, fertilizers and livestock among others. The distribution was held on Sept. 30 at the Imelda Cultural Center. Building the ‘green wall’ of Ilocos Norte

Adriano Staff reporter Laoag City —If the People’s Republic of China has its famous great wall, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte also wants to have its own wall—green wall—to secure the future against flash floods and soil erosion. Estrella Sacro, head of the re-greening program of the Ilocos Norte provincial government said they are now on the process of identifying an ideal public lot where they could set up a bigger a provincial nursery for the said purpose. Backed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) provincial environment and natural resources officer Juan delos Reyes has already initiated at least 7,000 hectares worth P60 million as counterpart for the green wall project. 521 farmers receive garlic seedstock

Andres Contributor             Batac City —Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has distributed more than 26 tons of high quality garlic planting materials to 521 farmers from the seven garlic-producing towns of Ilocos Norte in a simple program held at the MMSU Bodega on October 9. The seed loan was part of the project “Revitalizing the garlic industry through a sustainable seed support system” which is being jointly implemented by MMSU, Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), DA Regional Field Unit 1(DA RFU-1), Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic, and Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARRDEC), the Garlic Growers Association of Ilocos Norte, Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice-Batac), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), and the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI). DPWH now closely monitoring bridges’ construction

By Dominic B. dela Cruz Staff reporter San Nicolas , Ilocos Norte—After receiving reports that the ongoing construction of bridges in Ilocos Norte’s second district has slowed down, Engr. Mathias Malenab said they will now be closely monitoring the bridges’ construction in this town as well as in Batac City. Mr. Malenab, the Dept. of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) second district engineer, said in an interview that there were reports that reached them wherein only few workers have been working on the bridges. The report, he disclosed, specifically mentioned the Nagbibingcaan Bridge in Batac. In view of this, Mr. Malenab said they have reminded the contractors of the scheduled completion of the project. The district engineer however stressed that in terms of accomplishments, the bridge construction in on track with the completion date. Adriano Staff reporter Laoag City —The Sangguniang Panlalawigan recommended the suspension of Bangui mayor Diosdado Garvida for gross misconduct, disloyalty, grave abuse of authority and oppression. The suspension is for six months. In a 19-page decision unanimously approved by members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on October 9 and was received by the Office of the Bangui Mayor on October 14, the board said Mr. Garvida failed to prove his innocence when witnesses accused him of firing his gun while trying to stop a quarry operator from extracting gravel and sand without any permit. Based on the decision, the SP believes the allegations of illegal quarrying activities on the part of the complainant, Kremlin Alupay of Barangay Masikil, Bangui, Ilocos Norte “could not justify the manner by which the mayor responded to the situation.
