City of Batac—After the oyster mushroom production, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Batac District Jail is now the pilot area for the Bolinao chicken project in Region I.

The project is a joint venture between Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Ilocos Agriculture and Aquatic Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARDEC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) exclusively for Region I.

Jail Senior Inspector Antonio Sapaden announced that BJMP Batac is “very lucky” as the DOST chose it as the project’s pilot area.

Mr. Sapaden explained that DOST funded the chicken coop construction in coordination with MMSU. The chicken coop has a cost of PHP100,000.

The BJMPs counterpart is the labor for the construction and caring for the chicken.

As the pilot area, DOST also provides the needed feeds and equipment for the said project.

In an earlier interview, MMSU section chief on training and continuing education (TCE) Bella C. Gervacio, she said BJMP Batac will be the pilot area for the Bolinao chicken project, which now comes to fruition.

She added that Bolinao chicken is a native chicken is predominant in Bolinao, Pangasinan.

She said that the project aims to improve the breed of the Bolinao chicken “tapnu saan nga aglalaok ta ngamin adu a klase iti native chicken ditoy Pilipinas”.

According to Ms. Gervacio, the project implementors chose BJMP-Batac as the first beneficiary of this project because they saw the receptivity of the institution; their current tie up project on the oyster mushroom production; having enough space for the project and surplus foods or remnants aside from the feeds, which is only an augmentation; and their willingness to cooperate in the project.

BJMP-Batac received five families of five hens and one rooster, each.

The agencies will also provide the incubators for chicken eggs.

No didiay structure bagi dan ton ngem dagitay manok saan ta sukatan da. Masapul nga adda sustainability of the project tapnun adda met maipasublat iti sabali ta ditoy to iti agbalin nga breeding house a mabalin to payen a paggapwan iti mailaku a piyek kadagiti interested buyers tayo,” Ms. Gervacio expounded.

“We are trying to market the Bolinao chicken nga isu kuma iti mang-dominate kadagidiay aglalaok nga breed iti manok tayo,” she ended.

The Bolinao chicken project comes at the heels of the oyster mushroom production, which began in July 2019.

Mr. Sapaden thanked MMSU and other agencies for their trust in giving skills training for the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

Ta mamati-ak nga dakkel to a makatulong dagitoy nga skills training kadagiti PDLs tayo intono makarwar da ta sindadaan to latta dagiti trainers a mangtulong wennu mang-assist kanyada uray adda dan ton iti ruwar,” Mr. Sapaden stressed.

BJMP-Batac first screened the PDLs who participated, and they chose only those who showed interest and commitment.

MMSU has chosen BJMP-Batac to help and rehabilitate the PDLs’ commitment in terms of their future social reintegration.
