Ilocanos seek holiday declaration for first Filipino Olympics medalist

LAOAG CITY—Ilocanos in this northern part of Luzon is looking forward to celebrate Teofilo Yldefonso Day on November 4 of every year as a regular holiday in the province. Known as the first Filipino Olympics medalist who brought pride to the country in 200-meter breaststroke in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and in 1932 Los Angeles Olympics in 1932, senior Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Matthew Joseph M. Manotoc initiated the filing of a provincial resolution requesting President Rodrigo R. Duterte to declare November 4 as a regular holiday. Born in Piddig town in 1903, Mr. Yldefonso’s remarkable achievement as the only Filipino athlete to have won back-to-back medals at the Olympics is one for the books up to this day. Laoag gov't eyes transfer of jail, slaughterhouse

(File photo) By Dominic Dela Cruz Staff reporter Laoag City —The city government here expects to relocate the Laoag City Jail and the city slaughterhouse in two separate locations soon. Laoag mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas disclosed that they plan to transfer the city jail to where the city’s current dumpsite stands. The Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) earlier ordered the closure of the said dumpsite. Ms. Fariñas explained that the area is wide for city jail and it will also suit the jail’s livelihood programs as well as their training and other activities. Batac City drowning

Batac rescue . The search, rescue and retrieval (SRR) team composed of the City Risk Disaster and Management Office, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fire Protection-Batac retrieve the body of the drowned victim identified as Brian Rabanal, 29 years old, single, and resident of Brgy. Quiling Norte last October 16 at 1:00 pm. The victim, along with his family were on a picnic at the Garasgas River bank in the morning of October 15 where he got drunk. By noontime, they decided to go home but he took a shortcut by swimming across the Garasgas River where authorities believed he drowned. The SRR Team went on a full search and rescue operations right after the family reported the incident but they had to halt at 6 pm. The barangay tanods of Quiling Norte were on guard at the area until the resumption of the search and retrieval operations on the morning of October 16 when they retrieved the victim. Caparispisan in this town, has been growing forest trees as part of its greening program.
