LAOAG CITY—The Philippine National Police (PNP) Region I office sacked 13 police chiefs in the region for poor performance in the anti-illegal drugs campaign.

Region I police director P/Chief Supt. Romulo E Sapitula said the 13 police chiefs “failed to pass their monthly evaluation rating”.

While visiting the different police stations in Region 1, Mr. Sapitula has reminded the police to perform well and double their efforts in the fight against illegal drugs.

“As head of office, it is your responsibility to improve crime clearance and efficiency in the locality,” Mr. Sapitula said.

In Ilocos Norte, Mr. Sapitula relieved the police chiefs in Batac City, Pinili and Nueva Era and Carasi effective July 31. He also relieved nine others, including the police chiefs in Candon, Narvacan, Santa, Alilem, Salcedo and Sugpon in Ilocos Sur; and Santol, San Gabriel and Burgos in La Union.

The PNP Regional Office said they have reassigned the relieved officers as checkpoint supervisors.

In the meantime, the regional office appointed the deputy chiefs in the said police stations as officers-in-charge.

In view of the recent typhoon that contributed to heavy damages in Pangasinan, the regional office gave the said provincial police office an additional one week to improve their performance.

“A way to ensure that the organization is working well is to see to it that the heads of units and offices are capable of doing the same,” said Mr. Sapitula as he pointed out the PNP have set standards to continuously improve the performance of police officers in Region 1.

“We will not tolerate any act of laxity and incompetence with our mandate,’’ he underscored.

During his recent State of the Nation Address, President Rodrigo R. Duterte, pointed out that the war against illegal drugs is far from over despite criticisms from human rights advocates.

Under the Duterte administration, the Philippine National Police reported over 102,000 anti-drug operations were conducted during the first two years of the Philippine drug war. A total of 147,000 drug personalities were arrested, while PHP14.66 billion worth of prohibited drugs were seized.
