Ilocos Norte peace, drug councils meet for 2nd quarter report

LAOAG CITY—The Provincial Peace and Order Council and Anti-Drug Abuse Council held a joint meeting for the second quarter review at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Session Hall.

Ilocos Norte Vice Governor Eugenio Angelo M. Barba presided over the conference in lieu of Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda Josefa “Imee” R. Marcos.

The Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO), with P/Senior Superintendent Cesar R. Pasiwen leading, presented updated data of illegal drugs-cleared municipalities which includes Marcos, Carasi, Dumalneg, Adams, Burgos, Currimao, Banna, Vintar and Piddig, and a total of 518 barangays out of the 559 barangays in the province.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) represented by agent Lanibelle C. Ancheta said that from April 1 to June 30, 2018, they seized a total of 4.9758 grams of shabu and 7.0996 grams marijuana.

The Philippine Army’s 702nd Brigade, through Lt. Col. Jearie Boy Familian, reported the significant reduction of the New People’s Army rebels’ strength, including the Kilusang Guerilla in terms of firepower and manpower and their movements in the province of Abra, a neighboring province.

In the forum, SP member Atty. DaVinci Crisostomo ordered the Provincial DILG officer Engr. Samuel Borja to prepare program of works for the PPOC and PADAC. The council has funded approximately PHP10 million for projects and programs in-line with the objectives of the two councils.

Also in attendance were top military and police officials in the province as well as from various government agencies.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
