Batac City-- Sangguniang Panlungsod of this city unanimously approved two resolutions endorsing major road rehabilitation, reconstruction, and upgrading by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The two resolutions cite the implementation of the off-carriageway improvement-tertiary road and the rehabilitation, reconstruction, upgrading of damaged paved roads of the Batac-Espiritu (Banna) road with no objection to the removal and cutting of 145 affected trees.

Batac councilor Bernardo Marders said that these projects will be implemented by the DPWH on their road widening projects.

It was learned that the road damages cause the increasing volume of traffic congestion in said areas.

In relation to this, the city government of Batac expressed no objection in the cutting and removal of trees as these affects the implementation of the project.

“These affected trees are imperative to pave way for the full implementation of the widening project for the safety and convenience of the travelling public and other road users,” Mr. Marders said.

To facilitate the project, the Sangguniang Panlungsod endorsed the implementation of the same interposing no objection in the cutting and removal of affected trees.

Reacting to this, DPWH Ilocos Norte Engineering District (INED) II engineer Mathias L. Malenab welcomed the two resolutions endorsed by his office.

Mr. Malenab thanked the city council for including in the resolution their “no objections in the cutting and removal of the affected trees”.

He said the felled trees will be turned over to the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources.

The DPWH will be replacing the affected trees with seedlings preferably indigenous tree species at a ratio of 1:100 as prescribed under the DENR Memorandum Order No. 2012-02 pursuant to the National Greening Program and climate change initiatives of the national government.

Relative to this, Mr. Malenab referred the said resolutions to the DPWH regional office for reference and for immediate action.
