LAOAG CITY—A center dedicated to preserve and strengthen the Ilokano weaving tradition will soon rise in Pinili town, home of national living treasure Magdalena Gamayo.

Funded by the Ilocos Norte government with PHP4 million, Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Joseph M. Manotoc said the project aims to boost the inabel industry in the province as well as the micro, small and medium entrepreneurs who will directly benefit from it.

“We wish to put up the center to show our support to our weavers and sustain the industry in the coming years,” he said.

In Pinili, Ilocos Norte residents take pride of its loom weaving industry and the existence of “Lola Magdalena” who continues to inspire and pass on her loom weaving skills to the younger generation.

In fact, the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in partnership with the Katutubo Exchange Philippines, municipal government of Pinili and the Sacritan Integrated School earlier introduced a summer program on inabel weaving for all interested individuals.

Once the weaving center will be established this year, it is expected that this will become a learning site and exhibit center for abel products.

To further promote inabel products, the Ilocos Norte government through the Provincial Tourism Office also initiated the conduct of inabel fashion show at the Aurora Park last December where local designers presented their unique artistry in creating gowns, casual wears and sportswear inspired by inabel textiles.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
