Ilocos Norte allots P25M for public school PCs

Laoag City—To ensure the accessible delivery of quality education amidst the pandemic, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) allotted PHP25 million for the procurement of desktop computers for public school students and teachers.

“Last week, [Ilocos Norte] Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc asked the Provincial Treasury Office to allot PHP25 million for the procurement of desktop computers. We hope that we can purchase it before the opening of classes and distribute it to identified clustered areas,” provincial education office chief Dr. Dany Daquioag said.

According to Mr. Daquioag, the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte (SDOIN) will assist in the identification of recipients, particularly schools in remote communities, of the desktop computers that they will use for downloading and printing of learning modules.

The provincial government is also requesting donations from business process outsourcing (BPOs) companies based in Ilocos Norte to augment learning equipment in public schools.

“Our office is also looking for possible donors. We already went to Alorica and Accenture. We hope that they will be able to give us even used laptops and computers. Nag-mapping din tayo sa mga areas na may internet access upang matukoy kung gaano kalakas o kahina ang connectivity sa mga eskwelahan doon. Sa pamamagitan nito, malalaman natin kung anong assistance ang ibibigay natin sa barangay,” Mr. Daquioag explained.

The education office is also eyeing the rehabilitation of i-Hub centers in the province, since only 50% of 21 schools under SDOIN's supervision have functional centers.

“This is a challenge to everyone. Hence, we are appealing to barangays and families of learners to make our homes the best alternative learning environment for our children,” he noted.

As of writing, there are 77,283 learners registered in SDOIN. The projected number for this academic year is 87,000. (Blessing Angel V. Agliam)
