LANDBANK opens new Agri-Hub in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur

STA. MARIA, Ilocos Sur—State-run Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) opened its first “Agri-Hub” in this province, the LANDBANK Sta. Maria Agri-Hub, on January 15, 2021.

The LANDBANK Sta. Maria Agri-Hub will provide financial and technical services to the Bank’s clients, especially to more than 10,000 farmers and fisherfolk in the municipalities of Sta. Maria, Burgos, and San Esteban.

LANDBANK’s “Agri-Hubs” are strategically located in the top rice-producing provinces in the country and designed to provide a wide array of services. This includes banking services such as account opening, withdrawals, and check encashments; lending services such as the processing of loan applications; and agrarian services such as processing of AR bonds and handling of agrarian-related concerns from landowners, bondholders, and Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs).

The LANDBANK Sta. Maria Agri-Hub will also offer LANDBANK’s various digital banking platforms, including the digital onboarding system (DOBS) which simplifies the account opening process for new clients to only 10-15 minutes.

The Sta. Maria Agri-Hub had its official inauguration on January 16, 2021, led by Department of Agriculture secretary William D. Dar, Sta. Maria mayor Brigido Camarillo, Jr., Burgos mayor Nathaniel D. Escobar, San Esteban mayor Ray M. Elaydo II, and LANDBANK North Luzon branches group head first vice president Ma. Belma T. Turla.

The LANDBANK Sta. Maria Agri-Hub is the fifth “Agri-Hub” to open nationwide, along with four newly opened “Agri-Hubs” in Calabanga, Camarines Sur; Barotac Viejo, Iloilo; Sual, Pangasinan; and Echague, Isabela.

LANDBANK now has a total network of 411 branches and 65 branch-lite units, composed of branch-lites, Agri-Hubs, LEAFs, tellering booths, and FX booths across all 81 provinces. This is complemented with 55 lending centers in strategic areas nationwide.

PIDS expert says income tax cuts justified; warns gov’t of revenue loss

Proposals to amend the personal income tax schedule appear to be well-justified. However, these proposals should include measures that will allow government to recover the revenue loss from lower income taxes. Dr. Rosario Manasan, senior research fellow of state think-tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), said at a seminar sponsored by the Philippine Senate, that government should look for new revenue measures to compensate for the projected revenue loss that will arise as a result of the implementation of any of the various proposals to restructure the personal income tax. Currently, there are several income tax reform proposals pending in both houses of Congress. All of them, according to Dr. Manasan, have the same objective of addressing the phenomenon of bracket creep, which results from “non-indexation to inflation of personal income tax brackets”.
