Laoag requests CHED satellite office

LAOAG CITY—The city government of Laoag has requested Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” A. Marcos and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis to support the establishment of a CHED satellite office in Laoag City.

Laoag Vice Mayor and Sangguniang Panlungsod Presiding Officer Rey Carlos Fariñas said the proposed satellite office would make higher education services more accessible to students, parents, faculty members and higher education institutions throughout Ilocos Norte.

CHED is mandated to promote quality, affordable and accessible higher education programs and services nationwide.

Fariñas noted that Ilocos Norte is a major educational hub in Northern Luzon, serving thousands of students, faculty members, researchers and administrators from public and private higher education institutions.

Among the province’s major institutions is Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), a state university known for its programs in instruction, research, innovation and extension, with campuses serving a large student population.

Private colleges and other higher education institutions in the province also regularly coordinate with CHED on matters involving academic program accreditation, student financial assistance, scholarship verification, institutional compliance and regulatory clearances.

Fariñas said students, parents and academic personnel currently have to travel outside the province to access CHED’s regional services, resulting in additional transportation costs and possible delays in processing documents and other transactions.

He said establishing a CHED satellite office in Laoag would bring frontline services closer to stakeholders, streamline scholarship and other administrative processes, and improve coordination between CHED and higher education institutions in the province.

As the capital and administrative, educational and commercial center of Ilocos Norte, Laoag is strategically located to host the proposed office and serve stakeholders from across the province, Fariñas said.

He added that a localized CHED presence would support efforts to decentralize government services and make higher education administration more accessible, responsive and inclusive to local stakeholders.
