LAOAG CITY—The Ilocos Norte
provincial government’s cash-for-work (CFC) program being implemented to
generate more employment among Ilocanos will continue to stay with a total
budget allocation of P15 million until the end of this year.
Estrella Sacro, Environment
and Natural Resources Office project manager confirmed this, saying the program
covers the highly vulnerable areas of the province that were hardly hit by
typhoon. The said office is under the provincial government.
Since the implementation of
the program, over 15,000 beneficiaries, who are in need of additional income,
were hired by the provincial government to plant indigenous trees and other
fruit-bearing trees in public lots of the province especially those who are
near the river banks and mountains from Badoc to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.
By schedule, the program
beneficiaries received at least P3,000 per month as stipend by planting more
trees within the so-called “Green Wall” of Ilocos Norte.
Around 3,860 barangay ranger
officers (BROs) are also tasked to safeguard and rehabilitate this province’s
watersheds meant to protect its residents from natural calamities and to
mitigate impact of climate change.
To help in the speedy
recovery of typhoon victims, the Department of Social Welfare and Development
in partnership with local government units continue to implement the CFC. In
exchange for doing community projects, such as tree planting, repair and
reconstruction of damaged houses and community facilities, clean-up and garbage
collection, among others, each beneficiary receives cash based on the
prevailing regional wages.
