DTI-Ilocos Norte joins 2016 Consumer Welfare Month celebration

The Department of Trade and Industry in Ilocos Norte joined the National Consumer Affairs Council (NCAC) and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, as host agency, in the celebration of the 2016 Consumer Welfare Month.

The theme for this year, “Consumer Protection: A Shared Responsibility”, emphasizes the importance of government agencies and the business sector working together in ensuring that consumers are given the protection they need.

As an initial activity, the government as well as the business sector showed their support by hanging their own streamers in their office and establishment premises.

As “Standards Week” is celebrated on the second week of October, monitoring and enforcement of the Standards Law was implemented in Laoag City through the inspection of Christmas lights in the different department stores. Destruction of uncertified Christmas lights was done in front of the DTI-Ilocos Norte Provincial Office.

Likewise, monitoring compliance of business establishments to different fair trade laws such as the Price Tag Law, Price Act, and the Tobacco Regulations Act was conducted in Batac City.  

To accentuate the celebration, a consumer forum was held on October 25, 2016 at in Laoag City.  The activity included for the first part lectures given by Evelyn V. Tanagon and Lovely Joy V. Asuncion from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Batac Branch; Jonathan Laroza and Robert Baniqued from the Department of Trade and Industry Regional Office I; and Janet A. Pascual from the National Food Authority Laoag Branch regarding BSP advocacies, standards and conformity assessment, labelling and fair packaging, handling consumer complaint and food guardian.

DTI Bagwis seals were also awarded to 32 business establishments that promote the highest level of business ethics and uphold a fair and honest marketplace for consumers broken down into 25 bronze, 6 silver and 1 gold seal.


Also present during the occasion were Regional Consumer Protection Division of DTI Region I officer-in-charge Atty. Rolando A. Lay-at and DTI-Ilocos Norte provincial director Engr. Benjamin M. Garcia Jr.

Free dormitories eyed for Nueva Era students in LC, Batac

P29 per kilo rice sold to vulnerable groups in Ilocos region
