Laoag City—Mayor Chevylle V. Farinas personally opened this year’s Laoag City Inter-School Sports Tournament held at the city multi-purpose basketball court.

Heavy rains at the time precluded the traditional parade. In its place, the city government held a program featuring all competing athletes from elementary and secondary school levels of private and public schools.

Mrs. Fariñas, in her speech, welcomed all the athletes for this year’s inter school tournament, which will feature other sports events aside from basketball.

Laoag City government sports coordinator Hipolito Salva said this year’s tournament include volleyball, table tennis, badminton, chess, football and athletics.

Mr. Salva explained that they will hold games during weekends to avoid any negative effects on school’s schedules.

He said they hold basketball games at the newly refurbished arena at the City Hall. The Ilocos Norte National High School and Northwestern University host the other events.

Mr. Salva added that this year’s tournament primarily aims to give athletes a chance for continued practice and performance.

He also disclosed that the tournament serves as selection process for the city’s contingent to the Region I Athletic Association (RIAA) meet.

Daytoy iti maysa a rason nga adda daytoy inter school sports tournament tapnu adda pangrugyanan iti siyudad a mangpili dagiti best athletes para iti dakdakkel a paglalabanan iti benneg iti sports,” Mr. Salva explained.
