Laoag City—The Provincial
Veterinary Office, together with the Provincial Engineering Office (PEO),
inspected four animal shelters to examine the facilities' level of disaster
preparedness in case a strong typhoon hits Ilocos Norte.
“Kasama namin ang PEO sa
pag-inspect ng mga animal shelters. Sinuri namin ang mga ito bago
i-turnover sa mga local
government units (LGU). Ayon sa memorandum
of agreement, ang mga LGU ang bahala sa management ng mga animal shelters pagkatapos itong i-turnover sa kanila," provincial veterinarian
Dr. Loida M. Valenzuela said.
The provincial government constructed animal shelters in four
towns: Badoc, Currimao, Dingras, and Solsona.
"Sa Dingras, due
for turnover na.
animal shelter," Dr. Valenzuela expounded.
Inside the animal shelters, each kind of animal such as cow,
carabao, hogs, goat, and sheep, among others have their own designated spaces.
According to Dr. Valenzuela, her team has coordinated with the municipal
disaster risk reduction management officers in the identification of animal
shelters in flood-prone areas.
She further suggested that a vacant lot, auction market, tobacco
curing barn, or old building can become temporary shelters during the rainy
season.
The provincial government will also provide water storage drums,
free animal feeds, and vitamins in shelters as part of its sustained disaster
mitigating efforts.
In August 2019, typhoon “Ineng” battered Ilocos Norte, leaving
over PHP7.5 million damages in the livestock sector alone. (Blessing
