Smart GIGA Study expands e-Learning offers with Canvas and NEO LMS

Manila—PLDT Enterprise, together with Smart Communications, Inc., has recently expanded the Smart Giga Study data pack by offering access to both Canvas and NEO Learning Management Systems (LMS) to cater to the current e-learning requirements of schools and universities nationwide.

“With e-Learning being the new norm, we want to help our students and teachers remain productive at home by providing the necessary tools they need for online education," said Jovy Hernandez, ePLDT President & CEO and SVP & Head for PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups. “We at PLDT Enterprise are committed to onboarding more LMS platforms for us to assist and serve more schools, more teachers, and more students in making their e-learning efforts easier.”

Smart Giga Study is PLDT Enterprise's academe-centric solution to the current need for online learning. It is a prepaid data pack specifically geared towards students and members of the academe allowing easier access to a selection of learning apps and productivity platforms.

Canvas and NEO LMS are tailor-made for use by schools and universities. Both platforms provide a complete solution for creating and managing all teaching and learning activities, collaboration tools, and more.

Canvas is one of the leading LMS worldwide used by universities and institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, Wharton School of Business, and Columbia Business School. Here in the Philippines, De La Salle Lipa, De La Salle University Manila, University of the Philippines and Our Lady of Fatima University are some of the schools using Canvas that availed of Smart Giga Study.

“Teachers and students want to maintain an active learning experience using Canvas from home, but a lack of locally available broadband internet makes that difficult,” said Melissa Hurrell, Senior Regional Director of Canvas in The Philippines. “This partnership directly addresses this accessibility challenge by giving them the Canvas learning resources they need over a mobile network, without incurring data overages.”

NEO is yet another great solution for schools and universities in the Philippines with its easy to use and easy to understand interface. It even has built-in integration with the Philippines Senior High School Standards. STI and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas are some of the schools currently using NEO.

As Graham Glass, CEO and Founder of CYPHER LEARNING, pointed out, "With our company's years of experience in the Philippine education system and support for the Filipino language, NEO is all systems go in assisting the academe to provide distance learning."

Subscribing to Smart Giga Study provides access to Canvas and NEO that will pave the way for the students' remote learning and the faculty's distant teaching. They can make the most of the daily data Allocation for Giga Study (1GB/day or 3GB/day), which resets at midnight as long as the offer availed is not expired or fully consumed.

Chet Alviz, VP & Head of Wireless Marketing and Smart Infinity for PLDT Enterprise added, "We are more than pleased to fortify our Smart Giga Study offering with the addition of Canvas and NEO. These systems will advance our e-learning initiatives on another level, which will greatly benefit our country's teachers, students and their parents."

Smart Bizload will reinforce this service by allowing the schools and universities to load their employees' accounts in bulk quickly and efficiently using a secure, easy-to-use web-based prepaid loading platform for Smart & TNT services.

This initiative is in fulfillment of PLDT Enterprise’s thrust to redefine the future of learning through continuous engagements with universities, colleges, schools and learning institutions nationwide so no learner is left behind.

PIDS expert says income tax cuts justified; warns gov’t of revenue loss

Proposals to amend the personal income tax schedule appear to be well-justified. However, these proposals should include measures that will allow government to recover the revenue loss from lower income taxes. Dr. Rosario Manasan, senior research fellow of state think-tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), said at a seminar sponsored by the Philippine Senate, that government should look for new revenue measures to compensate for the projected revenue loss that will arise as a result of the implementation of any of the various proposals to restructure the personal income tax. Currently, there are several income tax reform proposals pending in both houses of Congress. All of them, according to Dr. Manasan, have the same objective of addressing the phenomenon of bracket creep, which results from “non-indexation to inflation of personal income tax brackets”.
