Comelec girds for barangay, SK polls

Laoag City—With the May 9 general elections concluded, the Commission on Elections office here is preparing for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled for October this year.

The first thing to do for the poll office is to resume the voters’ registration process in July.

Currently, Laoag elections officer Atty. Julius Harvey Balbas said the barangay and SK elections is expected to push through. He explained that no postponement has been announced.

He added that he would immediately make an announcement should there be changes with regards to the October elections.

Mr. Balbas also disclosed that they are presently distributing cash cards to the 390 people who served as board of election inspectors (BEIs) in Laoag City during the May elections. The cash card would serve as their honoraria for their services.

The BEIs will receive Php4,500 each; while the support staff will be given Php1,500 each. The cash cards can be redeemed from the bank starting May 24, 2016.

Meanwhile, Mr. Balbas also advised all candidates in the recent elections to submit their respective statements of contributions and expenditures (SOCE) not later than June 8. He said the forms are available in the local elections office. He added that they are willing to assist the candidates.


He said no one has submitted his/her SOCE yet; he however mentioned that several candidates already got their SOCE forms.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
