Santos City—The Piddig municipal government
fronted by Mayor Georgina Salazar-Guillen shared their own ingenuities in a
forum on good governance and convergence project the Provincial Government of
Sarangani hosted on July 24, 2018.
The forum is about the “inclusive
business” approach in local government that sets models and plans for private
investments as part of the enduring programs of Sarangani Governor Steve
Chongbian Solon.
Engineer Eddie Guillen,
former Piddig mayor and now a consultant for his town, shared expertise he
experienced in agribusiness, especially the remarkable convergence project of
the town focusing on coffee production and how the Piddig made it as a tool for
sustainable development of the town.
Mr. Guillen first discussed
the major problems in an LGU: increasing poverty rate, lack of medical assistance,
poor disaster response, peace and order, untapped land resources, food security
and low productivity, lack of crop diversification, lack of agri-business financing,
poor education system and unemployment and underemployment dilemmas.
He also talked about factors
in troubleshooting and demonstrated a data on how to fix problems in accordance
with government policies. The main agenda of his presentation is all about
coffee production of the town that produced with various projects including farm-to-market
roads, flood control projects, water impounding dams, creation of cooperative
office, and tourism sites.
Mr. Guillen shared further the
formula in these projects thru convergence of the different offices in the
government especially on agricultural development aided by the Department of
Agriculture (DA), the help of the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR) on the National Greening Project (NGP), the Department of
Works and Highways (DPWH) and so on.
Also, he added the medical
assistance for the farmers and their town-mates thru “Piddig cares” that helps people,
especially the needy and the aged as a tool guide in supporting and sustaining
healthy individuals in town.
“We must see to it that in
everything that we do in the government, we should take a look on a bigger and
brighter… help our neighbors first by giving them resources to make their
living more meaningful and guide them in agribusiness as a response to the
government needs in a progressive and efficient public service,” said Mr. Guillen.
Gracing the occasion were the
municipal and provincial officials of Sarangani represented by board member
Jong-Jong Falgui, Board of Investment (BOI) assistant secretary Felicitas
Agoncillo-Reyes, BOI Governor Napoleon Concepcion, BOI Director Melanie MoleƱo,
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Sarangani Agribusiness Consultant
Jonathan Joson.
