Avian pest affects 9,000 birds in Ilocos Norte

Staff reporter

LAOAG CITYNew castle disease or avian pest has struck about 9,000 commercial and backyard poultry farms here affecting at least seven municipalities in the province.

So far, confirmed reports of avian pest were traced in Dingras, Marcos, Banna, Badoc Burgos, Bangui and Pagudpud.

Provincial veterinarian Loida Valenzuela confirmed this as she reported livestock coordinators in the province are currently monitoring the situation in every Barangay.

As of this morning [February 15], there are 9,000 birds affected. We need to have written reporting so we had already issued an advisory to all concerned livestock coordinators, Ms. Valenzuela said.

Now considered an outbreak, the Provincial Veterinary Office is trying to help contain the situation though Ms. Valenzuela admitted they have limited resources to cover all the birds affected.

Reports said avian pest has been contained in other parts of the Ilocos region but Ilocos Norte is still monitoring new cases, if any.

Compared to previous years, Ms. Valenzuela said this is the first time in the province that the PVO recorded thousands of birds affected by NVD, which she theorized the situation worsened due to erratic weather conditions.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
