Batac City—The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) here conducted “operation greyhound” late last year to check if illegal drugs are in the jail compound.

With K9 drug-sniffing dogs searching for illegal contraband inside the jail complex, Mr. Sapaden said they did not find any illegal drugs.

The Batac police also joined the said operation.

Mr. Sapaden added that all belongings of inmates—both male and female—were thoroughly searched.

He also disclosed that they usually conduct daily searches; however other law enforcement agencies also conduct unannounced searches. He added that the BJMP can also request for such search.

Operation greyhound, Mr. Sapaden explained was conducted through the request of several municipal police stations including Batac.

He stressed that the operation primarily aims to clear up the BJMP’s image which was tarnished by reports that illegal drug operations emanate from the National Penitentiary in Metro Manila.

There were 228 detainees at the time of the operation.

Batac police chief P/Supt. Marlon Paiste confirmed that no illegal contraband was found in the operation.

In Laoag City, police chief P/Supt. Edwin Balles also conducted a similar search in the Laoag jail.

Mr. Balles said he coordinated with warden J/Insp. Herminigildo Rivera prior to the operation.

Mr. Balles also reported that no illegal contraband was found,

Aside from illegal drugs, the two operations also looked for firearms, weapons as well as prohibited items in the jail including breakable glasses and bottles and bladed objects.

Dagitoy ngamin ket mablin a pangdangran iti pada da a balod isu nga inikkat mi iti possession da”, Mr. Balles said

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
