Police, DENR return turtle eggs to breeding site

Laoag City—Police officers here and representatives from the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) led the return of at least 19 sea turtle eggs.

The said eggs were returned to their natural breeding sites along the seas shores of Brgy. La Paz in this city.

On December 7, 2016, the Laoag police in coordination with the local DENR office responded to an information that a fisherman was selling “marine turtle eggs” at the Laoag City Commercial Complex.

The fisherman was identified as Jayson Antonio Pascual alias “Mang Jesse.”

The group confiscated the said eggs placed in a plastic container.; the DENR later identified them as sea turtle eggs.

Mr. Pascual was brought to the police station for questioning while the eggs were turned over to the DENR.

DENR is encouraging all people, especially those in coastal areas, to stay vigilant and support their wildlife conservation advocacy.

After the questioning, Mr. Pascual was brought to the Laoag City prosecutor’s office for inquest proceedings. He was later charged with violating Republic Act 9417, or “An act providing for the conservation and protection of wildlife resources and their habitats.”

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity.
