SPED outreach

THE DIFFERENT branches of Philippine National Bank in Ilocos Norte hold their annual outreach project at the A. P. Santos Elementary School in Laoag City. (Aceyork Guerrero)

The different branches of Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Ilocos Norte recently held an outreach project for the 120 special education (SPED) pupils of A. P. Santos Elementary School in Laoag City.

The beneficiaries were pupils who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, autistic and children with intellectual deficiency from the different parts of the province.

The PNB officers and employees gave the pupils special headsets, manipulative toys, art materials, grooming kits and other gifts. Snacks and games were also prepared for them.

The said charitable activity is an annual project of PNB Laoag-J. P. Rizal, PNB Laoag-Castro, PNB Pasuquin, PNB Batac and PNB Laoag City Cash and Clearing Center,

Dr. Christine D. Alipio, principal of A. P. Santos Elementary School, expressed her gratitude to the bankers for their love and concern for the SPED pupils.

The MMSU Graduate School Supreme Student Council (GSSSC), in cooperation with the Bad Circle Runners, will hold a fun run on January 20, 2018.

Dubbed as “1st MMSU Graduate School Fun Run”, the running event will be a 3K and 5K “run for a cause” for the benefit of the Tahanang Carmela D’Amore Orphanage.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
