LAOAG CITY—As two multi-national business-process outsourcing companies here are expanding, the provincial government’s Public Employment Services Office held special recruitment on March 22-24 at the Provincial Capitol.

According to PESO officer-in-charge Ann Marie Lizette Bitancor-Atuan, the two BPO companies in the province needed more employees to fill-in many in-demand positions such as accounting assistant, BPO resource management group associate manager, operational excellence senior analyst and many more.

Aside from the special recruitment activity, the PESO also conducted career coaching for applicants to know what to expect once the BPO companies employ them.

Three years ago, one of the BPO companies started hiring and training people in Ilocos Norte including graduating students and experienced professionals, to provide health and finance administration for the companys global clients across Europe and North America.

From an initial 200 BPO employees, it aims to hire 5,000 more workers as it expands its delivery center in the Ilocos region.

In 2014, the Department of Science and Technology awarded Metro Laoag for having the best IT-BPM infrastructure and for becoming a part of the Next Wave City, a reference to alternative IT-BPM destinations to Metro Manila and Metro Cebu.

This paved the way for the entry of major BPO companies here as the Ilocos Norte government continue to invite more investors and create stable, local jobs for Ilocanos.

PIDS expert says income tax cuts justified; warns gov’t of revenue loss

Proposals to amend the personal income tax schedule appear to be well-justified. However, these proposals should include measures that will allow government to recover the revenue loss from lower income taxes. Dr. Rosario Manasan, senior research fellow of state think-tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), said at a seminar sponsored by the Philippine Senate, that government should look for new revenue measures to compensate for the projected revenue loss that will arise as a result of the implementation of any of the various proposals to restructure the personal income tax. Currently, there are several income tax reform proposals pending in both houses of Congress. All of them, according to Dr. Manasan, have the same objective of addressing the phenomenon of bracket creep, which results from “non-indexation to inflation of personal income tax brackets”.
